Random Things I Am Liking Lately

It’s been a while since my last random likings post, so here’s what’s on my radar these days:

The Lily Mirror from  Ballard Designs would look great above a dresser in a girl’s room (or my room, whatever!):

I am looking for any excuse to purchase one of these amazing Bogart Flat Weave Wool Rugs from Garnet Hill.  Using one of these as a runner in a hallway would be perfect.

Currently coveting this amazing Scallop Trim Coat from Boden for the transition to Spring.

I am head-over-heels in love with these Nest and Egg Prints from Wisteria.  I could design an entire nursery around these babies.

This clean-lined Apex Bookcase from West Elm would fit perfectly against a short wall that would otherwise be wasted space.

These quatrefoil design Firenze Embroidered Panels from Ballard Designs are gorgeous.

Imagine the vignettes you could create on mantels, consoles and bookshelves with these adorable Hear No, See No, Speak No Owls from At West End.

These fresh and feminine desk accessories from PB Teen would look fabulous in both my daughter’s play room and my home office!

Have a fabulous weekend, y’all!

Hallway Update: Console-ation

Happy New Year!  Thanks for all of your comments on my hallway update.  So, I have chosen the green color scheme!

I luvvved the contrast of the red against the gray walls, but I decided that it didn’t have any “flow” with the rest of the house.  Also, the hallway doesn’t have very much natural light and the red may have been a little too dark for the space.

Anyway, I found the most GORGEOUS console at Wisteria.

{Insert SWOON!!}  Measure first, get excited later.  Lesson learned.  At 19.5 inches deep, it’s way too deep for the space.  {Insert gnashing of the teeth.}

To quote Chicago, “don’t look back, never look back.”

Moving on.  I stumbled across this lovely console at Brocade Home, which is perfectly long (52 inches) and not too deep (17 inches).  At $499 + $50 shipping surcharge, it’s a little pricey, but it’s a fabulous, lifelong, investment piece.  I love the high gloss black finish.

I also love the Parsons console (pictured in my inspiration board above) from West Elm:

The dimensions work (54 inches long and 18 inches deep), and the price is about right ($349 + $30 shipping).  I love the simplicity of its lines and Parsons tables will always be a classic look.

I also like the idea of the Parsons book shelf from West Elm.  The extra space would be nice for storage (books!) and fun to style.  It’s the same price as the console and the dimensions are still about right (48 inches long and 16 inches deep).

In a similar vein, I have always liked the Chloe tables from Pottery Barn:

It is on sale ($299 with no shipping surcharge), and the dimensions work well (47.5 long and 17 deep).  My only concern is that I will get tired of this look over time.  These tables have been around for at least 6 years, maybe longer.  I am not sure that this console has a timeless, classic look that I will love for years to come.

The console will sit centered on a long wall in the hallway with black gallery frames hung above, and two lamps on each end.

What do you think??  I would love to hear your opinions, thoughts and ideas!

New Years Prezzie-lution….Hallway Update

My New Years “Prezzie-lution” is a hallway update.  My upstairs hallway is, well, empty.  Aside from my pelmet box project, it is a pathetically sterile segue.  It has gotten left behind as all of the bedrooms and rooms downstairs got prettied-up.  So, as a half New Years Resolution and half “prezzie” to myself, I resolve to give it a little facelift.

To start me off, below are two inspiration boards using two different color schemes.  This is a jumping off point, and sure to change!  The walls are painted American White by Benjamin Moore, and I have already started a gallery wall using black frames with wide, white mats.  I would love to acquire a runner, console, lamps and maybe recover my cute pelmet box (currently in the green P. Kaufmann fabric shown below).

Green Color Scheme

[Left to Right: 1. Benjamin Moore’s American White, P. Kaufmann’s Curly Q in Green Tea, 2. Pottery Barn Wood Gallery Frames in Black, 3. Fabric Drum Shade from Shades of Light,  Spindle Lamp Base from Shades of Light, Medallion Drum Shade from Shades of Light, 4. Parsons Console from West Elm, Coventry Jute Rug from Ballard Designs.]

Red Color Scheme

[Left to Right: 1. Benjamin Moore’s American White, Red Imperial Trellis Fabric, 2. Pottery Barn Wood Gallery Frames in Black,  3. Chinese Red Column Lamp from Shades of LightParsons Console from West Elm, Coventry Jute Rug from Ballard Designs, 4. Striped Braided Rug from Ballard Designs.]

What do you think?  Leave me a comment and let me know whether you like the green or the red look better!  I can’t wait to take you along as I keep my New Years Prezzie-lution, for once!  🙂  Happy New Year, y’all!

Home Office “Make-under”

Thanks to the snowstorm, I finished my home office make-under.  Let me explain.  When we moved into our current house 3 1/2 years ago, my office was in a great room with lots of natural light.  The room is off our front hall and does not have a close-able door.  So, when baby spark! came along and we decided to have a part-time nanny, I moved my office upstairs in the corner of our large rectangular master bedroom.  Needless to say, I have a much smaller home office than I used to!

So, this “make-under” has been going on since November of 2007!  First, I bought a corner desk because my traditional desk looked very misplaced in the corner of the bedroom.  Then, I got stuck.  (This is why people hire decorators — to get you unstuck and push you along so that an easy project does not take 2 years!)  I also like referring to is as a make-under because I didn’t spend much to transform the space.

Here is the before:

And taaaaaaaaaaa-daaaaaaaaah, here is the after:

Here is the run-down:

The lamps are the same, and I purchased them from a Target in Bluffton, South Carolina years ago.

I replaced my cute repainted and recovered (but way uncomfortable ) wooden chair, with the comfy white leather office chair from Overstock.

I painted the two boring baskets on the desk and under the printer using white Rustoleum from Lowes.

I got the silver bordered white frames for $4 each from Target.  The new white pen holder is also from Target.

The shelves were quite a find — the West Elm in Richmond is closing (sniffle) and I stumbled upon an amazing sale.  The shelves were 50% off, and then I got an additional 15% off of the total (paid $25 for 2 shelves!).

My beloved doggie book ends are Jonathan Adler for Barnes & Noble.  The silver Jefferson cups were given in college and law school as honors and gifts (I think it is a Virginia thing?), and I use them to hold my paper clips, rubber bands and push pins.

I covered my reference books in brown paper bags!  Remember back in high school and middle school when you were required to cover your books?  I like the cleaner look, and it’s kind of mysterious, no?  🙂

And finally, I have always wanted my very own inspiration board.  My mom brought me this white bulletin board from her house and I found some fun colorful push pins at, where else?, Target!

I would love to replace my blotter and mousepad, so I will keep looking.  Also, I would love to have a white monitor, keyboard, and printer, but work sends them to me (fo’ free!), so I can’t really complain, right?

Here is another look:

Random Things That I am Loving Lately

Isn’t this bag from Sundance Catalog divine?

I am loving this lamp from Shades of Light.  It may just turn up in baby spark!’s “big girl room.”

Speaking of the “big girl room,” I think this tu-tu-esque bedskirt from Pottery Barn Kids is so gorgeously whimsical.

This boyfriend watch from Fossil is on my list for Santa.

This delicious soup is my new go-to meal for a quick, yummy dinner.

I am coveting this sheet set from West Elm.

Kinda along the same lines, doesn’t this coat from Patagonia look warm, cozy and comfy?

This is my new fave bargain shower gel (~$2) — found in most grocery stores and drug stores.

I think this post reflects my current state of mind —
completely scatterbrained!  🙂
