Reader Question: Affordable Stools

I love getting questions from Spark! readers.  I recently received this one from Julie:

I need some help with finding some great stools for my entry way. Seen any lately that aren’t $500?

I am imagining Julie using stools in her front hall like this:

Or like this:

Although I do not know much about Julie’s entry way or her design preferences,  I decided to give her a wide range of options and keep it under $200 per stool.  Shall we?

Bargain Stools: Under $100

{Hourglass Side Table, Urban Outfitters, $78}

{Cindy Crawford Trellis Foot Stool, JC Penney, $99.99; and check out this post
on painting and recovering this stool by the girls over at Matters of Style}

{Zebra Kilim Stool, World Market, $59.99}

{Black and White Printed Stool, World Market, $79.99}

Stools That Won’t Break Your Bank: Under $200

{X Bench, Ballard Designs, as low as $179 depending on specs}

{Julah Ottoman, Anthropologie, $198}

{Louis Stool, Restoration Hardware, as low as $170 depending on specs}

{Charles Ghost Stool (Small) by Philippe Starke for Kartell, Unica Home, $127.50}

{Courbe Ottoman, Ballard Designs, as low as $149 depending on specs}

{Seagrass Stool, Gumps, $195}

{Chinese Garden Stool, Wisteria, $129, and if you didn’t see my previous post, try $49  for something similar at Target, click here to read}

{Pod Table, Urban Outfitters, $110}

It’s hard to pick a favorite, isn’t it?  Also, CB2 has some great options.  Their website was down when I was preparing this post, so definitely go check out their selection too.

Julie, I hope that I have given you some inspiration for your entry hall.  Thanks so much for writing!

Do you have a question?  I would love to hear it!  Leave me a comment or drop me a line at needsparkblog@gmail.com.

Seasonal Stocking Sampler

It’s almost time to deck the halls!  In our house, each year we hang a hodge podge of stockings that include our childhood stockings and various newer stockings that we have picked up along the way.  I like the nostalgia and “vintage” look, but everytime Christmas rolls around again, I am tempted to buy a set that all match.  Here are some of the best around:

I love the muted colors of these stockings from Garnet Hill ($38 each).  How about those ruffles — adorable!  Free monogramming too!

The Scandinavian feel of this Colossal Sweater Stocking from Anthropologie ($148) is fabulous.  I love the pom poms too!

stocking2

Sorry for the small image, but you should check out these shell stockings from Horchow ($148).  They would be great for all of the snow birds who flock south for the winter.  The detailing is amazing and I love the neutral color scheme.

Speaking of a tropical Christmas, aren’t these Lilly Pulitzer stockings so much fun?

These Vera Bradley stockings are unexpectedly preppy and fun too ($22).  I like the little pocket in the front for a bonus stocking stuffer!  (sorry for the blurry picture).

stockings8

If you are looking for something more traditional, I like these knit stockings from Pottery Barn Kids ($29 each).  The fair isle sweater vibe is Christmas cozy!  Oh, and free shippping too.

stockings7

These patchwork stockings from Pottery Barn ($24) are pretty too and would look great hung on any mantle.  Monogramming is available and free shipping again!

stocking9

I like the homemade feel of these unique stockings from Unica Home:

And I am loving this retro reindeer stocking from Bebesniklefritz on Etsy ($22):

And last, but not least, my favorite stockings of the season are from Plum Cushion on Etsy ($40 each).  I found these when Plum Cushion was featured on Little Green Notebook, and fell in love!

So, which are your favorite?  Are your stockings matching or do you have a hodge podge of different stockings hung on your hearth?

Merry merry!

Random Things That I am Liking Right Now

Below are a hodge podge of items that I am loving at the moment with no regard to order (or price tag in some cases):

anthrocoat

I.DIE.  Bananas.  OTT.  {Insert favorite Rachel Zoe saying here.This coat ($298) from Anthropologie is perfection.

greekkeytable

I love these greek key accent tables ($179) from Acacia.  I think they would also look great with a coat or two of white or navy blue paint.

cookiefamroom

I can’t stop looking at this family room featured in Cookie Magazine this month.  I absolutely love the symmetry and the dual living spaces created in the same room.  Somehow, the “wood cabin look” works without being to country or campy.  The contemporary drawings above the hearth are beautiful and understated.  Love.

mclampg

I would love to gentley place one of these beauties on my desk and stare all day.  At $625 a pop, I guess gazing at the Maine Cottage website will have to suffice.

gapjeans

The best affordable jean of the season — Gap’s Long and Lean ($59.50).  I love the higher-waisted, trouser feel of these jeans, and the long inseam options.  They are so comfy too.

unicatableunicatable2

Aren’t these tables from Unica Home ($263) museum-worthy?  I would love to use two or three of these jaw-droppers in front of a couch or love seat as a cocktail table.  Simply divine.

pbklamp

I think this table lamp ($69) would look great in a home office or study.  I would love a pair sitting on either end of a console in a hallway too.  Who knew that it was from Pottery Barn Kids?  Kids prices for fab lighting, nice!

So, what’s striking your fancy lately?

A Toy Story

Hi there!  Sorry for the unexpected hiatus.  What beach rental these days does not have wifi?!  I got spotty reception while squatting on some other wireless network, but not enough to compose a coherent blog post.  Missed y’all!

Anyway, while on mini-vacay, I was pondering the storage of my recently-turned-two daughter’s new toy acquisitions.  You know, the beloved (but worse than kitschy) talking Elmo, garishly colored ride-on toys and neon stuffed animals?

Wouldn’t it be great if fun toys could double as aesthetically pleasing decor?

giggleuroll

Don’t you love this Giggle U Roll by giggle?  I don’t think that I would mind this stylish ride-on toy hanging around underfoot.  It almost looks like a modern side table, doesn’t it?

And I love this pared-down Tori Rocking Horse by Design Within Reach.  I know how great it looks in the living room because my sister gave it to my daughter for her birthday.  [Note to self: great gift for 18 month to 24 month olds!]

torirockinghorseI also really like the Rody, a hippity-hoppity ride-on toy, that I was introduced to at my fave kid-friendly coffee shop, Cartwheels and Coffee.  They come in all all sorts of fun colors, but I am partial to orange, of course.

rody

How cool would this retro, sleek Saab roadster from Unica Home look parallel parked in the family room (even after the wee ones outgrow it!)?

saabroadster

Y’all know my partiality to swings, porch and otherwise.  I love indoor swings and think they add a touch of “not-taking-myself-too-seriously” and whimsy to any space.

teakswingI would love to suspend this Teak Swing from Design Within Reach in my daughter’s play room or bedroom.  It would require some space (and perhaps increased homeowners insurance!), but would look so fresh and unique.

I have been admiring this Red Flowers Indoor/Outdoor Swing for a while. I found this in Acacia Catalog.  I would love to hang this in the corner of the playroom as a reading and relaxing nook.

redflowersswing

I am coveting this fabulous, mod and comfy Bubble Chair!  It would look great just about anywhere – family room, living room, bedroom, sunroom, you name it!  I love the clear acrylic for letting the light in, and the cozy, “curled up with a Dr. Seuss book” shape.  Any kid would LOVE this hanging nest.

bubblechair

I have mentioned these before, but I am still enjoying these indoor/outdoor swings from Penobscot Bay Porch Swings.  This is the Bar Harbor Swing and would be perfect for an indoor swing for kids.  I would love to add fun, colorful, complementary accent pillows, my daughter and a cup of hot chocolate!  It would look great hung in front of a windowed wall in a bedroom or playroom.

penobscot

A glimmer of hope exists that fun and whimsical kids’ toys can “play nice” with a chic, modern, and fresh home!
