Home Decorators Doubletake

Upon arrival in my household, usually the Home Decorators catalog does directly into the recycle bin.  Think cheesy doctors’ office
waiting room furniture.

However, after seeing a few promising items on design blogs recently, I leafed through my catalog over the weekend.  And wow!  Great stuff and prices.  They are collaborating with Martha and must be under new creative direction!
Check it:

{Garden Side Chair, Home Decorators, $99}

{Reflections Storage Shelf, Home Decorators, $349}

{Martha Stewart Fretwork All Weather Rug, Home Decorators, $34-$257}

{Emily Side Table, Home Decorators, $169}

{French Side Chairs, Home Decorators, $169}

{Ainsworth Beveled Mirror, Home Decorators, $299}

{Distressed Cain Candleholders, Home Decorators, $17-$29}

Keep up the good work, Home Decorators!

P.S. If you haven’t checked out the new High Gloss Magazine, grab your beverage of choice and devour it.  Kudos to Paloma, Erin and the whole team!  My fave spread is Jamie Meares‘ house – gorgeous.

Project Big Girl Room!

Project Big Girl Room is underway!  I am transforming my almost three year old’s nursery into her “big girl room.”  Because she is staying in the same room and I love the wall color, I am keeping a similar color scheme — lavender, mint green and white — but with a sassy Parisian flair!

I am trying to stay away from using all Pottery Barn Kids and Land of Nod, but I tell ya, it’s hard considering how easy, relatively inexpensive and available all of their items are!

So, here is my inspiration board:

{Windows: Audrey Chenille Panels in Lavender, Pottery Barn Kids; Print: World is Amazing, The Love Shop, Etsy; Paint: Benjamin Moore, Lavender Ice; Mirror: Ballard Designs (similar); Headboard: Blanc de Blanc Headboard, Target; Bedding: Pottery Barn Kids, Paris Toile (no longer available);  Side Tables: Flower Accent Table; Pillow: French Lady with Dog Burlap Pillow, NextDoortoHeaven, Etsy, Bed Skirt: Elizabeth Tulle Bed Skirt, Pottery Barn Kids, Sheeting: Katie Polka Dot Sheeting, Pottery Barn Kids.}

If you have been a long-time follower of the blog, you know that I love these monogrammed shades from Shades of Light: I was thinking about DIY’ing the shades with a more interesting monogram on an inexpensive shade from Target or Homegoods.

Here are some before pictures taken in February right before the big girl bed made its entree (excuse the little muchkin who is running around with the pillow from the crib!):

So, what do you think of Project Big Girl Room?  Stay tuned!

Reader Question: Mirrored Tray Makeover

A sweet Spark! reader, Elizabeth, asked about the mirror hanging in my hallway:

and I am so glad that she did, because I forgot to share its story.

A few years back, I found the mirrored vanity tray (like the one below) at a local antique store for $5.  I see them all over the place, and they are usually under $10.

The one I found was really badly tarnished and it didn’t clean up very well.  The patina wasn’t gorgeous, but I hung it in a small space in my bedroom.

By the time the hallway makeover came along, I was tired of the little tarnished mirror and decided to paint it black and hang it on the gray walls to accent the ornate “filigree” pattern and give it a fresh look.

So, I taped along the edges of the mirror, covered the mirror with two layers of paper bag (newspaper will work too), and spray painted two coats of Krylon black on the front (let it dry) and then turned it over and sprayed two more coats of paint on the back (just the silver part, not the backing!).  It was too easy!

Also, mirrors are so easy to paint because if you make a mistake or don’t get the tape exactly right, and paint ends up on the mirror, you can just take paint thinner and a rag and clean it up.  No harm, no foul!  Just be sure to wear some latex gloves when dealing with paint thinner!

When I was browsing for images, I came across this similar mirror vanity tray makeover from Miss Mustard Seed (a really cool blog):

She found her vanity tray at a thrift store for $1.50.  I love the cream version above and think that a few of those pretties would make a lovely series hanging over a headboard or settee.

So, go check out your local antique store, flea market or thrift shop for a gorgeously inexpensive and easy DIY mirror makeover!  Thanks for the question, Elizabeth!

My DIY Bedside Mirrors

Hi!  Sorry that I never said good-bye during my week-long hiatus.  I rushed out of the house, and never had the opportunity to “get on the grid” while on vacation.  Isn’t that the modern definition of a good vacay?  :)

So, as a follow up to my Bedside Mirrors post and inspired by this post by the MoS gals, I share with you my attempt at bedside mirrors!  I am thrilled with the way they turned out.  Especially for $60!

I made a trip to a local antique store (Forest Hill Antiques in Richmond, Va.), and stumbled across these two mirrors:

{Stamped Syroco, tagged for $48}

{Tagged for $30}

Although they are different, these mirrors have the same look and were almost the exact same dimensions.  The finish was slightly different, but I knew that I wanted to paint them, so that didn’t matter to me.  I bought them both for $60.

I took them home and hung them in the space to make sure that they were the right scale for the room.

So, here is the master bedroom before the mirror installation:

{Ok, I moved the ugly alarm clocks, baby monitor(s), kleenex boxes, etc.,
but I just couldn’t move the Divine Miz Annie from the foot of the bed.}

Here is a shot of the mirrors, pre-paint:

I actually really loved the look of the gold mirrors in the bedroom, and almost kept them this way, but as I mentioned, the finishes were different and although no one would have noticed, it was bugging me.  But, I loved the way the mirrors reflected the light from the dormer windows across from the bed as you can see from the picture above.

So, Matt unscrewed the frames off of the mirrors for me and I went to town on the frames with three coats of white Rustoleum spray paint.  We let them dry and put them back together.

And voila:

I am really loving the symmetry, balance, depth and extra light that these mirrors provide.  What an awesome $60 upgrade!

What do you think?

P.S.  Special thanks to my sweet pup, Annie, for being a good sport during my photo shoot.  Isn’t she a cutie pie?

Random Things I Am Liking Lately

It’s been a while since my last random likings post, so here’s what’s on my radar these days:

The Lily Mirror from  Ballard Designs would look great above a dresser in a girl’s room (or my room, whatever!):

I am looking for any excuse to purchase one of these amazing Bogart Flat Weave Wool Rugs from Garnet Hill.  Using one of these as a runner in a hallway would be perfect.

Currently coveting this amazing Scallop Trim Coat from Boden for the transition to Spring.

I am head-over-heels in love with these Nest and Egg Prints from Wisteria.  I could design an entire nursery around these babies.

This clean-lined Apex Bookcase from West Elm would fit perfectly against a short wall that would otherwise be wasted space.

These quatrefoil design Firenze Embroidered Panels from Ballard Designs are gorgeous.

Imagine the vignettes you could create on mantels, consoles and bookshelves with these adorable Hear No, See No, Speak No Owls from At West End.

These fresh and feminine desk accessories from PB Teen would look fabulous in both my daughter’s play room and my home office!

Have a fabulous weekend, y’all!
