Happy Weekend

Recipe for the perfect weekend:
sleep in, drink coffee, read book, take nap, drink wine.

Oh, and preferably in a room like this….

Closets as Rooms

As part of Project Big Girl Room, I was thinking about turning one of my daughter’s two CAVERNOUS closets into a little room.  The room would function as a reading nook/play space.  I am envisioning comfortable chairs, floor mats, and/or bean bag chairs, a little bookshelf and a small table, with lots of wall art and maybe some horizontal stripes on the walls and doors?

So, as far as inspiration goes, I am inspired by closets turned into home offices and reading nooks.  Home offices are a stretch for my not-yet 3 year-old, but that seems to be what a lot of people turn closets into!   The creativity below will knock your Ferragamos off….

Closets as Home Offices:

{I die for that acrylic “ghost” desk chair….}

{I love the use of wallpaper on the back wall of the closet above and below.}

{I like the use of the curtains instead of the closet door in the picture above and below, but I think I am going to keep the closet doors for symmetry with the other closet in the room.}

{I like the little peg boards above.}

Closets as Reading Nooks/Daybeds:

{The horizontal stripes here look fabulous and I like that they used a twin bed that doubles as a reading nook and an extra bed for guests.  I don’t think our closet is big enough for that, but it’s perfect for this space.}

{Another closet turned reading nook that doubles as an extra bed.}

{Love this floor seating, simple book case and clip-on light.}

{This nook would have been my dream as a kid.  I love everything about it — the hanging bookshelf, the wall art and the little table with that sweet yellow lamp!}

What do you think?  Can I pull it off?

Random Things I am Liking Lately

What’s on my radar lately:

I am totally smitten with this bedroom.  I love the neutral colors, wall-to-wall seagrass rug, fabulous fireplace and amazing vertical bookshelf.  Perfect!

{Image courtesy of Laura Day via  Two Ellies}

This ain’t your mama’s one-piece.  Lotsa coverage with some va-va-voom.  Love the name too: the Accomodating Maillot (as in, for my big wide a$&).  :)

Life is a parade — don’t you love this Ditsy Pennants Pillow?  It would look perfect in a nursery, kids room or a beach house.    So adorbs.

Cutting for Stone is an amazing epic journey.   A moving and unforgettable story that I didn’t want to end.  Read it.

I saw this fun tray at my local Target and thought it was a cute, kitschy take on the “Keep Calm and Carry On” print:

This Antipasto-Style Penne is an amazing summer lunch or dinner.  I substituted diced ham for the proscuitto and it was equally as good.  It’s sooooo yummy and a good way to use up pesto before it goes bad.

I love body lotion and I have found a new fave: Heavenly Flowers by Victoria’s Secret.  It smells like a Michael Kors or D&G summer fragrance for a fraction of the price.  A whole bottle is on sale right now for $9.99!

With the humidity during the summers in Richmond, I am always looking for a good hair product to keep the “fly-aways” to a minimum.  My hair dresser came to my rescue last week — this shine spray by It’s a 10 does everything and smells divine too!

Accent Wall Done Right

I have gotten a few questions about accent walls from y’all, and while I am typically not in favor of the concept, Erin has officially convinced me that accent walls can be (as she says) “amazeballs.”

If you have just emerged from life under a rock and don’t follow Erin’s blog, Elements of Style, add it to your reader STAT!  It’s one of my favorite daily reads.

My DIY Bedside Mirrors

Hi!  Sorry that I never said good-bye during my week-long hiatus.  I rushed out of the house, and never had the opportunity to “get on the grid” while on vacation.  Isn’t that the modern definition of a good vacay?  :)

So, as a follow up to my Bedside Mirrors post and inspired by this post by the MoS gals, I share with you my attempt at bedside mirrors!  I am thrilled with the way they turned out.  Especially for $60!

I made a trip to a local antique store (Forest Hill Antiques in Richmond, Va.), and stumbled across these two mirrors:

{Stamped Syroco, tagged for $48}

{Tagged for $30}

Although they are different, these mirrors have the same look and were almost the exact same dimensions.  The finish was slightly different, but I knew that I wanted to paint them, so that didn’t matter to me.  I bought them both for $60.

I took them home and hung them in the space to make sure that they were the right scale for the room.

So, here is the master bedroom before the mirror installation:

{Ok, I moved the ugly alarm clocks, baby monitor(s), kleenex boxes, etc.,
but I just couldn’t move the Divine Miz Annie from the foot of the bed.}

Here is a shot of the mirrors, pre-paint:

I actually really loved the look of the gold mirrors in the bedroom, and almost kept them this way, but as I mentioned, the finishes were different and although no one would have noticed, it was bugging me.  But, I loved the way the mirrors reflected the light from the dormer windows across from the bed as you can see from the picture above.

So, Matt unscrewed the frames off of the mirrors for me and I went to town on the frames with three coats of white Rustoleum spray paint.  We let them dry and put them back together.

And voila:

I am really loving the symmetry, balance, depth and extra light that these mirrors provide.  What an awesome $60 upgrade!

What do you think?

P.S.  Special thanks to my sweet pup, Annie, for being a good sport during my photo shoot.  Isn’t she a cutie pie?

Spring Inspiration: A Swedish Home

Ikea, Hanna Andersson, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.  As of we needed another reason to love Sweden….

Well, I found one.  Check out this amazing summer home.   The home is owned by Jill Sorensen, the blogstress behind Live Like You.  This gal has it all.  No really.  She founded Marmalade Interiors (an international design firm), she started a DC-based charity that helps victims of domestic violence, she is a mother, screen writer, producer, actress, and — wait for it — a fashion model!

Each summer, she flees the heat and humidity of Virginia to spend time at this UH-MAZE-ING lake house in Torp, Sweden.

I love the white walls and white painted floors in the entry hall with a pop of turquoise in the chandelier and warmth on the floor from the dhurrie rug.

The console and mirror above are amazing.  Notice the wide striped paint — the aquamarine and white contrast looks great.  The picture above the chair is of her mother in a row boat.

She even has a chic toy cabinet!  I love the shelf liners.

I would stay in this guest cottage anytime!  I love the white with the varying shades of blue, and that sparkly and dainty light fixture.  The turquoise console is fab.

And the view, HELLO!

Her son’s room looks like it’s right out of Domino Magazine — I like the use of the white and natural wood, the light blue walls and the white drapes.  Not too kitsch or matchy.  Lovely!

I will conclude with her design credo:

1. Good design should be available to anyone to improve the quality of their lives.

2. Great style doesn’t mean big budget.

3. Your home should make you happy.

For more pictures, check out her post on the house.  Also be sure to check out her gorgeous portfolio

HIP or SKIP?

While perusing my West Elm catalog on the elliptical the other day, I came across these bed linens:

And I was wondering YOUR opinion.

Chocolate and Vanilla Eye Candy

Autumn has arrived in Virginia and it has got me thinking about all things warm and cozy.  The contrast of brown with white is such a classic and timeless color combination that looks fabulous everywhere.

So, indulge with me in some delicious (but calorie-free!) goodies….

I love these artistic chairs ($199) and one would look fabulous by itself as an accent in a bedroom, or as a set around a kitchen or casual dining room table.
